Reading French Vowels
a – This is similar to a “short a” in English, the sound that can be heard in ‘cat’, ‘sat’, etc. In the French alphabet son, the ‘a’ sound says its own name.
e – In the French alphabet song, the ‘e’ says its own name. (There are many English words with this sound – if we find one during our learning, we will be sure to let you know!)
è, ê – The “troublesome ones”. These both have the same sound, similar to a “short e” in English. The sound can be heard in the English word ‘bed’.
é – Easily confused with the ones above, this vowel has the sound of a ‘long a’ in English, of you may with to think of it in terms of ‘eh’ as in the “Canadian eh!”
i, y, These two vowels have the same sound, similar to the “long e” in English. This sound can be heard in the English word ‘beat’
o – This vowel has two sounds similar to the ‘long o’, as in ‘boat’ and the ‘short o’ as in ‘of’.
u – This is similar to the ‘long u’ in English. The sounds can be heard in the English word ‘dew’
